Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is one of the most popular ingredients in skincare today. It’s hailed as a powerful antioxidant with the potential to protect, brighten and revitalise the skin. But does it live up to the hype—and is it necessary in your skincare routine?

Vitamin C is believed to offer numerous skincare benefits, including protection against sun-induced damage, improvement in skin texture and tone, brightening of dark spots, promotion of wound healing, and stimulation of collagen production.

While there is some limited scientific research supporting these claims, definitive evidence remains somewhat limited, and results can vary depending on formulation, concentration and how it’s stored. Nevertheless, its promising effects and extensive availability of vitamin C skincare products make it a frequent find in many people’s skincare regimes.

The Challenges of Topical Vitamin C


Despite its potential benefits, Vitamin C is not without its drawbacks. One of its main challenges is its instability—it is highly susceptible to degradation when exposed to heat, light, or air. This makes formulation and storage critical to maintaining its effectiveness. Vitamin C skincare products are available in a range of concentrations, and there is no clear consensus on the optimal dosage for maximum results. Concentrations about 10% may increase the risk of irritation without significantly increasing any benefits.

Another consideration is its impact on different skin types. While some individuals find that Vitamin C helps reduce inflammation and enhance skin clarity, others experience irritation, redness, or sensitivity. This variability can make it challenging to determine whether a particular product or concentration will be effective for a specific skin type. It is worth going in slowly and considering patch testing these products before going in too liberally.

My Experience with Vitamin C Skincare


I have tested several Vitamin C products over time and noticed a definite brightening effect. The way it enhances luminosity and freshness is something I really love. However, as someone with rosacea-prone skin, my experience has been mixed. Unfortunately, every Vitamin C product I have tried so far has aggravated my skin, causing irritation and redness. This leaves me torn between continuing my search for a formulation that works or accepting that my skin may simply not tolerate Vitamin C.

Moving Forward

While I am eager to find a Vitamin C product that suits my skin, I am hesitant to continue investing in new formulations at the moment. Given the numerous affordable options available, I believe it would be unfair to dismiss these products entirely, as they may work exceptionally well for individuals without sensitive skin. For now, I will take a break from my search for Vitamin C and focus on other ingredients that offer similar benefits without the irritation. Things like azelaic acid or niacinamide are worth looking at if vitamin C irritates your skin.
